Winter is settling in for the season, and that means cold temperatures, longer nights as well as snow and ice. When the snow melts the cold nights set it and freeze it, and many of us end up with small lakes that could almost serve as an ice rink where our driveways should be.

There are several different ways to combat this intrusion, but the best is a two-fold approach. The longtime standard product to combat ice has been salt. Salt works extremely well at melting the salt but has a pretty big drawback. The salt dissolves as it melts the ice, leaving a salty puddle where the ice was.

Applying a good layer of sand is the next step. You can add your sand with your salt beforehand to make a blend, add the sand on top of the salt or after you apply the salt. No matter how you do it, applying sand will result in a gritty surface.
