Even if you aren't an NBA fan it is quite possible you have seen a clip or footage of the 2011 NBA Slam Dunk contest when Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin successfully leaped and dunked over a Kia Optima to win the event. Right after the even finished the dunk went viral online and Kia quickly put together a TV spot showcasing the amazing feat in awesome slo-mo. Recently, this aforementioned commercial was honored at the 2012 Effie Awards, which highlights some of the most effective marketing efforts in North America each year.
The video (which happened to gain over five million views on YouTube) not only highlighted Griffin's dunking prowess, but also increased the awareness of the 2012 Kia Optima to those in the Midlothian area and beyond. That resulted in an increased consumer purchase consideration by 20 percent just 48 hours after the dunk. The event triggered record-breaking sales numbers for the sedan, as it has posted five-straight months of the being the best-selling model among all new Kia vehicles.
All that, plus the addition of Griffin as the brand's global ambassador, the only NBA player who can make that claim with an automaker, led to a Bronze Effie Award for its efforts.
"It is an honor to win the Bronze Effie for the slam dunk that broke all conventions and the ad spot that created lasting impressions of the Optima for sports fans and consumers alike," said Michael Sprague, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Kia Motors America.
The 2012 Kia Optima is full of entertainment features while also being fun to drive. There's the UVO infotainment system powered by Microsoft that offers voice command along with a standard eight-speaker Infinity audio system. With three different trim levels and five distinct engine options, you'll find the Optima to possess both style and versatility that will suit you individually.
